Cali hearts nerds by Global Hermit

896MB Sparkle GTX-260+

Bill Gates once said, “Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.” If we are going by stereotypes a nerd is someone highly intelligent but generally socially and physically awkward. There are a number of things that define a nerd from their social isolation to being bullied. Some nerds have been shown to have an interest in a variety of subjects such as Science, Mathematics, Technology to things like computer games, trading cards games, comic books, and even role-playing. Many nerds that we see on television also tend to suffer from various forms of mental illness including but not limited too Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

By a physical standard, I myself would never have fit into the category of nerd however I very much was. I collected comic books, played computer games, and spent much of my time in social isolation. Despite that not all nerds are not well adjusted and respected members of society. Some nerds like Urkel and Screech are social misfits who you simple wonder how they function in day to day life and then others like Gil Grissom function very well though their peers tend to think they are odd or unusual now and again. Some of my favorite characters on television are nerds so here is my top 10 nerds on TV.

10. Adam Ross (CSI: NY)
Adam Ross is played by A.J. Buckley, a lab technician in the New York City Crime Lab. Adam Ross makes his first appearance during the second season but despite that we still do not know much about him. We get a little glimpse into his life here and there with references to Guitar Hero making him happy at a particular troubled moment as well as the comment he makes to a young man that has OCD which gives a hint that he himself might suffer from it. Hopefully in Season 6 we will get to see more of Adam Ross.

9. Alan Harper (Two and a Half Men)
Jon Cryer has played many nerds from Duckie in Pretty in Pink to Alan Harper in Two and a Half Men. With his well kept, combed back hair to his often awkward way about him, Alan becomes just as lovable as Duckie did. Alan has an ex-wife that walks all over him and a brother who is his polar opposite. Alan drives a Volvo and runs his own chiropractic clinic but he hates to be reminded that he is not a medical doctor.

8. Chuck Bartowski (Chuck)
Zachary Levi plays Chuck Bartowski, a twenty-something underachiever. Chuck works at the local Buy More and is head of the Nerd Herd, of all things. Fate has its way with Chuck and the young man living a normal, average life, suddenly ends up with a super computer for a brain. To complicate things more for him Chuck ends up with two lives; spy life and a non-spy life. Chuck is a geeky guy and through the course of the series you get to see many of the things often associated with being a nerd including gamer jargon.

7. Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory)
Two young men with very high IQ’s and one beautiful blonde. Sounds like a good story for a television series and it is, in the highly successful and funny, Big Bang Theory. Johnny Galecki and Jim Parsons star as Leonard and Sheldon, two Caltech prodigies who live across the hall from a beautiful blonde aspiring actress. Leonard has a 174 IQ and enough unresolved sexual tension with the neighbor Penny to last a lifetime of episodes. His roommate is Sheldon, a child prodigy with OCD tendencies, and a complete lack of understanding of Irony. The pair together brings a delightful and fun night of television and if you disagree we can play a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizards, Spock to decide.

6. Willow Rosenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
Being a redhead myself I am rather partial to, Willow Rosenberg played by Alyson Hannigan. Redheads Unite! Willow was every nerdy guys biggest crush and she grew from being a computer hacking, researching, nerd to a pretty powerful witch during the course of the series. Willow was one of the best reasons to watch the show and the character developed more and more each episode. By the fourth season, a large number of young men had their hearts broken when Willow was revealed to be a lesbian but for the public that just made them love her more.

5. Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman (Mythbusters)
Take two guys with experience in special effects and put them together to bust myths by using Science. Sounds like a winning combination but really its just a reason to blow things up. All scientist want to know how things work and proving a theory to be correct or wrong is the driving force behind any scientist. Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman take that to a whole different level. These men take common myths that many of us have heard and try to debunk them. Who does not want to know if a 1967 Chevy can get up to 350 mph by putting Rockets on the roof?

4. Dexter (Dexter’s Laboratory)
Dexter is a cartoon character featured in the cartoon called Dexter’s Laboratory. The story revolves around a boy genius, with thick black glasses, a short stature, and a secret lab hidden underneath his parents home. This young nerd can create just about anything he puts his mind too and uses them to battle against his arch-nemesis Mandark. Despite his parents being American, Dexter speaks with a heavily Slavic accent and has to put up with his sister Dee Dee who loves to play with his inventions.

3. Dr.Larry Fleinhardt (Numb3rs)
Peter MacNicol plays Dr. Larry Fleinhardt in the show Numb3rs. Larry is a professor of physics at CalSci and best friend of Charlie Epps. Larry is very awkward in social situations despite being highly intelligent. He can be relaxed at times and neurotic but he is the ultimate absent-minded professor. Dr. Fleinhardt has even gone so far as to eat all white foods to keep supersymmetry so that he can better focus on his research.

2. Greg Sanders (CSI)
In the start of the series he seemed to be a girl crazy nerdy guy who dressed oddly and had unusual hair. As the series has continued the character of Greg Sanders, played by Eric Szmanda, has grown from a young, nerdy, lab technician who liked Hawaiian Shirts and had a tendency to dress unusual to a pretty cool, more mature, nerdy guy. Now that he is a crime scene investigator, Greg has altered his dressing a bit taking on a more mature look about him. Lets face it though, despite his more mature look, Greg is still one of my favorite nerds.

1. Dr. Spencer Reid (Criminal Minds)
Matthew Gray Gubler plays my number one, favorite nerd, Dr. Spencer Reid. Spencer is a genius who graduated high school at the age of 12. With a ton of degrees, 187 IQ, an Eidetic Memory, and the ability to read 20,000 words a minute Spencer Reid is one of televisions nerdiest nerds. Bullied during his school years, Spencer Reid was raised by his schizophrenic mother who spent many hours reading to him. Because of this Reid grew up learning just about everything he knows from reading books. Dr. Spencer Reid has a talent with words but just don’t let him get behind the wheel because his driving skills, reportedly need some work.

The Rothbury Music Festival, dubbed as a sustainable camping festival celebrating music, art and action took place July 3 – 6, 2008 in the small, one-traffic-light town of Rothbury, Michigan. The festival, an event conceived by the promoters at Madison House Publicity and AEG Entertainment, was first announced publicly in November of 2007; at the time however, the only details released was the fact that the festival would be taking place at The Double JJ Ranch.

In February 2008, the initial lineup of the Rothbury Music Festival was released, and included such big name acts as The Dave Matthews Band, Snoop Dogg, Primus, John Mayer, Widespread Panic, Phil Lesh & Friends, 311 and more. Modeled after the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival which takes place every year in Manchester, Tennessee, Rothbury would design their festival around an environmentally friendly theme, and would make every effort to offset the event’s contribution to global warming in a variety of ways.

After all, with nearly 40,000 people driving and flying in from all parts of the country and even the world, the carbon footprint would obviously be enormous, and completely against everything the festival is about. Concert goers were offered “green” tickets; a portion of the proceeds would go towards investing in wind farms to produce renewable energy, planting trees and more. Furthermore, on behalf of the Rothbury Music Festival, Shelby High School received a full solar panel system that was installed by Black Rock Solar.

But the Rothbury Music Festival’s contribution to the environment and the local neighborhoods didn’t stop there. There was also a canned food drive held, with limited print posters offered in exchange for just a few non-perishable food items. During the festival all of the donated goods were on display in a canned food sculpture; after the fest was done everything was donated to local homeless shelters and rescue missions.

Once the festival was over, promoters gave Montague High School 15 Gibson guitars and a $2,500 voucher to be used for additional musical equipment for their jazz band. Students at Shelby High School also received a similar donation for their jazz band.

But the Rothbury Music Festival certainly wasn’t a good time for all. Michigan State Police report 18 arrests, most on drug related offenses, and there were also two deaths on festival grounds, both involving drug overdoses. Though the deaths occurred on the same day (Sunday – the last day of the festival), the cases were unrelated. Though the future of the Rothbury Music Festival is shaky to say the least, patrons of this year’s festival are eager and more than ready to return to the Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury, Michigan.

LG Vu for AT&T by blueoneiam

Sony SAL 70400 F4 5,6 70 400mm G SSM

My first ever slider phone was my LG Chocolate and I just loved that phone. I thought it was the coolest thing ever! Previously they had only really sold flip phones, which are easy to break, so I fell in love with the slider. The LG Chocolate held up well, barring a few scratches, and still works great today. However, when I found out I could get a Samsung Glyde for $30 or a LG Voyager for $70 (i think it was 70), I just had to upgrade my phone once again. After much comparison, I choose the Samsung Glyde. Even though the LG Voyager was slightly larger, had a slightly cooler keyboard and seemed a little more advance. What sold it for me was that the Glyde is a slider, where as the Voyager is still a flip phone. It might not flip the same way as most phones, but it’s still a flip, and therefore still more likely to break.

The Slider
The Samsung Glyde slides open just like the LG Chocolate did, except this time it slides width wise instead of height wise. When you are looking at the phone closed, the screen shows vertically, but when you slide open the phone, the screen switches to show on the wide view so that you can easily type and read the functions at the same time. One thing I constantly notice about sliders it that they are hard to break. The slide function is very stable and even if you slide it out hard or with a lot of force, it’s not likely to screw anything up. Plus, it’s very easy to slide open and closed with one hand so you can multitask (just don’t do it while driving!)

The Screen
The touch screen is a very cool, but not necessary feature. What I mean by that is that you can still most all the functions by using the keyboard, so really the touch screen is just a flashy way to navigate. That being said, I LOVE the touch screen! The screen is auto locked so you have to touch a specific area to unlock it. This means you do not have much worry of your phone unlocking on its own. The screen has easy access to some of the most used functions such as calendars, reminders, messages, contacts and the main menu. There is a shortcut button that you can customize to display all of your favorite functions on the shortcut menu. Finally, there is a dial pad button that opens up the old fashioned dial pad so that you can make phone calls without having to slide open the phone.

Note: Make sure you put a screen protector on your phone before using it. My LG Chocolate scratched on day 1 when I had my keys in the same hand! I didn’t make that mistake this time. Instead, I bought a generic screen protector pack that allowed me to cut a piece out to the exact size I needed. These protectors can be removed and replaced as needed, but at least your screen does not get scratched.

The Keyboard
While the screen is pretty easy to use, I use the keyboard a lot more because it is even easier. The first time that I sent a text message via this keyboard was the greatest! There’s no more trying to remember which number to press for each letter. The standard QWERTY keyboard is just a mini version of your computer’s keyboard. The keyboard has an Fn key (much like a laptop) so you can switch to turn it into a number/symbol pad as well as to use the arrows to navigate the screen. It took me a little time to get used to typing with my thumbs, but after a few tries it becomes easy.

Battery Life
One of the first things I noticed about my new Samsung Glyde as compared to my LG Chocolate was the battery life was MUCH improved. My LG Chocolate was at the point where I had to recharge it almost daily, even if I only made a 10 minute phone call. Well my Samsung Glyde does not seem to need charging nearly as often. For example, I went on vacation and halfway there I realized I forgot to bring my charger. The phone was at 3 bars, not fully charged. I avoided making phone calls but did still make one or two, and also took some pictures as well as looked at the time on my phone throughout the trip. 4 days later, my phone was still working. It was down to 1 bar but still working! I was amazed. My LG Chocolate would have surely been dead after just a day or two. I’m going to take care of my battery by trying to fully charge it every time it needs charging and hope that works.

Sound Quality
I’ve had phones in the past that didn’t get very loud even when the volume was turned all the way up. With this phone, that is not at all a problem. The sound is loud and clear when on regular phone, and just as loud and clear when on speaker phone. On the other end, no one has ever complained about hearing me whether I use speaker phone or regular phone. I have had people tell me with ANY speaker phone that they can tell they are on speaker phone and hear a slight echo, and that doesn’t go away here. However it isn’t enough to annoy them or tell me to get off speaker phone so I still use it a lot for convenience when no one else is home to get annoyed by it.

Camera
I already have a digital camera to bring on vacations and special occasions, however what happens when I don’t have my digital camera and something interesting happens? With my LG Chocolate, I had taken pictures and video in the past but the pictures were not very high quality and the videos were very small. Although I did not buy this phone FOR the camera, the features of the camera are a plus. Pictures can be taken with or without flash up to 1600×1200 and Fine quality. That’s pretty large for a phone camera. Other features include a self timer and a multi-shot set up which allow you to take pictures back to back to back. The camcorder allows you to tape up to 30 second clips, but you can change that setting if you want. The resolution for videos goes up to 320×240 which is still pretty small. This shows that videos on the phone aren’t really meant for computer viewing.

Features
Overall, the phone doesn’t seem to have any special features that I didn’t have before. Everything seems pretty standard as I still have my calendar, tip calculator, alarm clock, notepad and other things I used on my LG Chocolate. These features are easier to use do to the touch screen and the keyboard, but other than that they are basically standard.

I do not access the internet or email on my phone, but the mobile email preview does look cool. However, as long as I always can get to a computer, I haven’t found a use for this yet. This phone does have VZ Navigator if you would like to turn that on. We always use VZ Navigator on my husband’s phone so I have not tried it on mine yet. The Glyde is Bluetooth compatible and can be used as an MP3 player as well, neither of these are features I have used yet, but I may try them one day!

The final feature I can think of that I actively use is the V Cast Song ID which is free, but not available on all phones. My husbands phone does not support the Song ID, but I’m glad mine does because I use it all the time! You hold your phone up to the radio/speaker for 10 seconds and it tells you the name of the song and the artist. From here, it saves the songs title and allows you to either purchase it for download, or just to save the title as a reminder.

Overall
I love my Samsung Glyde and it was certainly worth the $30, but I would have never gotten this if I had to pay much more than that. I was satisfied with my LG Chocolate so I only upgraded due to the good deal, plus my husband already had a memory card that fit my Glyde. I bet teens and college students would love this phone as well due to the ease of the text messaging feature and the music feature. It’s a very durable phone

Canon PIXMA MX870

A couple of weeks ago I created a parts list for a custom PC that cost just under $1,000, including an LCD monitor, and a friend of mine told me I should bring the budget down more.  So, after a bit of rearranging and reselecting my parts, I formed a $500 PC.  Please note that this PC, unlike the $1,000 one, does not include a monitor; I simply didn’t have that much money to spend, and I figured you most likely already have one.  Same rules apply as my other article: all prices are from Newegg.com, before tax and shipping but after mail-in rebates.  So let’s get started:

CPU: Intel Pentium D 805
This processor is currently the cheapest dual-core processor on the market.  For that matter, it’s only around $15 more than it’s single-core counterpart.  So I figured, why not?  It runs at 2.66GHz but has been reported to overclock like crazy, many bringing it up to around 3.4 or 3.6GHz.  At the price you’re paying, you can’t really beat that.  And even if you don’t feel like you need a dual-core now, the theme of this article is to save money, and buying a dual-core processor saves you money in the long run by keeping you from upgrading longer.
Price: $96.00

Motherboard: ECS RT410L/800-M 2.0
Running on an ATI Radeon XPRESS 200 chipset, this motherboard is really a bargain.  It has all the essentials, like a PCI-Express x16 slot, two DDR2 slots, ports for 4 IDE and 4 SATA drives, and built-in audio, LAN, and even video, in case your video card breaks and has to be replaced.  (This is a micro-ATX case, which probably won’t matter to you at all, since it’ll fit in a standard sized case.  It’s just less expensive because it’s smaller.)
Price: $49.99

Memory: G.SKILL 1GB DDR2-667 (PC2-5400) dual-channel pair
It’s the highest speed the motherboard supports, at a decent latency (timings are 4-4-4-12), and enough to play games.  Not much more to say.  Dual-channel also makes it faster by doubling the interface bandwidth.
Price: $89.99

Graphics: SAPPHIRE Radeon X850XT 256MB
I chose the video card last, after all the other parts, so I could spend the most money possible on it.  The top video cards today could actually be more than my entire budget, so you can see my motives.  Anyway, this is a fairly well-performing card, and better than NVIDIA’s products of comparable price.  It should be able to play almost any game you can throw at it, and at decent framerates for the price.  It has 16 pixel pipelines and a 256-bit memory interface, which is quite good.
Price: $115.99

Hard Drive: Samsung 250GB SATA
A standard SATA hard drive, with 250GB of storage and a 7200RPM spin speed.  It’s compatible with the SATA2 standard, so if you have a SATA2-supporting motherboard (which this setup doesn’t) you’ll have an interface bandwidth of 300MB/s.  And 250GB should be enough to store plenty of data.
Price: $69.99

DVD Burner: BenQ Dual-Format, Dual-Layer Drive
The cheapest dual-layer DVD burner on the site.  These days they’re so inexpensive that every new computer should have one.  They’re practically giving them away.  This one covers all the standard formats, with 16X DVD+R and DVD-R write speeds, 8X for DVD+R DL, and 4X for DVD-R DL.
Price: $27.25

Case: Broadway Com Corp 82-4HL Mid Tower w/500W Power Supply
Just your standard case and power supply, but it does have a couple of frills.  It has side air vents for the CPU and video cards, plus a screen on the front with time and temperature information, along with a few other things.  Inside the case you’ll find room for 4 5.25″ devices and 6 3.5″ devices, and a 120mm fan in the back, which will make less noise than a smaller one.  The power supply is adequate and will be able to power the PC with these parts.
Price: $46.99

And there you have it.  The final price of all parts is $496.20.  And just think how much this would cost you from Dell, HP, or any other computer manufacturer.  (Yes, I know there are other costs involved, the biggest one being Windows, for which a full-version Home Edition license costs you $200 or so, but it’s still quite comparable, and you have a lot more versatility with your own Windows CD than with a pre-installed version on a computer.)
